Tom

Canvas sketch – where again I felt that adding some heavy paint would take away from the childish expression. Sometimes I only mark a few guiding lines to help me draw with the brush. As in this case, when I get too involved I end up with a simple fresh portrait. Charcoal.

Tommy

“Tommy, The First”

This portrait marked my first attempt at capturing a human subject, dating back to the early 2000s. The painting conveys a sense of youthful innocence, both in the sitter’s expression and the artist’s execution. The brushstrokes, while tentative, bring a fresh vulnerability to the piece, highlighting the soft lines and subtle features of the young subject. The choice of acrylics lends a smooth, vibrant quality to the work, while the composition reflects my early exploration into portraiture, filled with both curiosity and promise.

Ubuntu

A large 4ft square canvas. Being human and showing humanity. The core values of Ubuntu are survival; solidarity; compassion; respect and dignity. Our world could do with a massive case of global Ubuntu.

This painting was based on (a far better) a photograph. I need to find the source and recognise the owner of that image. Poweful and inspiring women. Acrylic

Windswept

A cold, sunny and blustery winter’s day (in a deep and dark December), in Connecticut – circa 2006.

The large brush strokes make this a quick and simple portrait – focusing on the hair and faux fur of the coat. Acrylic on a 3ft x 2ft canvas
